Per the Chamber of Commerce:

West Sacramento has a rich history that began sometime around the early 1840s when Flemish immigrant John Swartz became the first white settler to settle along the river front across from what is now Old Sacramento. Later in 1849, Margaret McDowell became the first person survey the land and divide into township parcels and called it Washington.

Unlike the city across the river, West Sacramento remained rural and dedicated to agriculture. In the late 1870s, hops were the major crop and picking the hops became the main source of labor for Patwin, Chinese, and Japanese people in the area.

By 1880, 1,555 residents were living in Washington township. In 1914, this township was renamed Broderick. Between 1900 and 1920 the population grew to 2,638 inhabitants and three distinct communities of cultural diversity emerged: Broderick, Riverbank (later becoming Bryte), and West Sacramento.
The community continued to grow and and add more townships, including Southport. In 1897, the townships incorporated to become the City of West Sacramento and today, more than 51,000 people live in West Sacramento and more than 3,500 business are located within the city limits.
